Watch out James Brown, as Alex Anwandter is vying for the title of the “Most Active Individual in the Entertainment Industry.” Over the past year, the talented Chilean musician introduced El Diablo En El Cuerpo, his lively disco and house-infused follow-up to the underwhelming tones of 2018’s Latinoamericana.

Now, nearly a year after the much-anticipated comeback with his latest album, Anwandter has announced a new release named Dime Precioso, scheduled for release on May 24. Unveiled exclusively on Remezcla today, the music video for the flagship single “Gaucho” showcases Chile’s pop legend at his most whimsical, mixing references to classic animation, queer literary works, and South American cowboy scenes.
“Gaucho” is designed as a communal daydream of secretive glances and sensual rural pursuits in the Argentinian grasslands. The backdrop of house music plays alongside as the focus shifts to a model decked out in flowing cotton garments, leather chaps, and a broad-brimmed hat, beneath which Anwandter provocatively leans to whisper sweet nothings in his frontiersman’s ear. They sway in abrupt, angular motions reminiscent of the tango, later mirrored by sequences of the now public domain Steamboat Willie displaying affection towards Minnie Mouse. Another powerful shot reveals Anwandter gazing ominously from beneath a thin veil, evoking the figure of the titular character from Federico GarcÃa Lorca’s acclaimed play, La Casa de Bernarda Alba.
“I’d say it’s mostly about feeling romantic in Argentina, haha,” states Anwandter via email, adding, “‘Gaucho’ is just a taste of what’s to come.”
Although Anwandter has revealed few details about Dime Precioso, in a recent Instagram Q&A, he hinted that the forthcoming album may veer away from dance tracks compared to its predecessor. Nonetheless, “Guacho” is euphoric and soulfully similar to last year’s “Unx de Nosotroxs” featuring Javiera Mena; both irresistibly captivating tracks fueled by the heart-pounding club vibes of his current home, New York City.
Will Dime Precioso bring more summer anthems or lead us on another mysterious journey? The reality will be disclosed on May 24, yet akin to Anwandter’s central character in “Guacho,” we are certainly in for an eventful ride.
