The imminent movie Turtles All the Way Down, derived from the 2017 novel by John Green with the identical name, is slated to premiere on Max on Thursday, May 2nd. The stars of the film include Isabela Merced, Felix Mallard, Judy Reyes, and Cree Cicchino. The title of both the novel and the movie originates from a famous saying, but what is the importance of the phrase “turtles all the way down?”

The phrase “turtles all the way down” relates to the concept of endless regression or the notion that each explanation requires another elucidation. More particularly, with regard to the film, the phrase hints at the legendary idea of the World Turtle supporting a level Earth on its shell. This turtle is then believed to be resting on the rear of a bigger turtle, which subsequently rests on an even grander turtle, and so on.

Basically, it is an infinite loop of turtles.

In spite of the significant implications hinted at by the title, neither the film nor the novel delves as profoundly into philosophical explorations. Instead, Turtles All the Way Down narrates the tale of high school student Aza Holmes (portrayed by Isabela Merced), who confronts intrusive thoughts due to her obsessive-compulsive disorder, and her intimate companion Daisy Ramirez (enacted by Cree Cicchino) as they commence on a mission to track down a wealthy fugitive and ponder over the course their lives should pursue next, including the possibility of Aza engaging in a romantic connection with the fugitive’s offspring.

Turtles All the Way Down represents John Green’s fifth literary creation to be adjusted into cinema, following the earlier adaptations of Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and Let It Snow.
