For movie buffs who still like to collect physical copies of movies, you may have noticed that many of Netflix’s original shows like The Queen’s Gambit and Bridgerton are not available for purchase on Blu-ray or DVD. However, fans of Jenna Ortega will be glad to hear that this will not be the case for the debut season of her widely praised comedic suspense series, Wednesday.
Despite its rarity, Wednesday is set to make its premiere in physical format on March 26, 2024, when Season 1 will be available on Blu-ray and DVD. Just a quick note: March 26 falls on a Tuesday.
Other Netflix original series that have been released on Blu-ray and DVD in the past include Orange is the New Black, Narcos, and Stranger Things. Various factors are taken into account when determining the potential availability of a Netflix original series on store shelves, such as whether Netflix holds the non-streaming distribution rights for the show.
Currently, Season 1 of Wednesday has the highest total viewership at 252.1 million. Following behind is Season 4 of Stranger Things with a total viewership of 140.7.
In January 2023, Wednesday was officially approved for a second season. Filming will begin in Ireland starting this April. In July 2023, Ortega received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, making her the third — and youngest — Latina to receive such recognition.
Recently, reports have emerged indicating Netflix’s significant interest in Wednesday, to the point of considering a spin-off series focused on the character Uncle Fester (played by Fred Armisen). If this spin-off achieves the same level of success as Wednesday, Netflix is likely to expand its collection of Blu-ray and DVD offerings.
