Get ready: The Marías are gearing up for a comeback with a brand new album on the horizon. Today (March 7), the alternative pop group revealed details about their upcoming LP and debuted a nostalgic music video for “Run Your Mouth.”
Following the excitement generated by their individual tracks and EPs, the band — led by Puerto Rican vocalist María Zardoya — released their debut album, Cinema, in 2021. A year later, The Marías secured their first Grammy nomination for Cinema in the Non-Classical Best Engineered Album category. Now, Zardoya and her fellow musicians are teasing their next LP, Submarine, with the latest single “Run Your Mouth.”
“Run Your Mouth” fuses The Marías’ distinctive alternative pop sound with a funky edge. Fueled by disco-inspired beats, María Zardoya embraces empowerment and stands up against others trying to silence her. She channels her frustrations into a whimsical yet rebellious dance anthem.
“This song was one of the initial pieces Josh and I created for Submarine,” María Zardoya revealed in a statement. Back then, I avoided conflicts, and whenever a serious conversation arose, I would evade. I eventually recognized it as a defense mechanism, acknowledging my fear of being vulnerable. It’s a unique track on the album. I hope it gets you grooving.”
The music video for “Run Your Mouth” was directed by Bethany Vargas. María Zardoya and Josh Conway collaborated on the creative outlook of the retro visuals with Vargas. The video exudes a nostalgic Y2K feel, showcasing The Marías performing the track within monochromatic boxes reminiscent of those used by *NSYNC and Destiny’s Child in their music videos.
The Marías’ Submarine album is slated for release on May 31. In 2023, the band earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year alongside Bad Bunny for their contribution to “Otro Atardecer” from Un Verano Sin Ti.
