Salma Hayek, the Oscar-nominated actress known for her role in the film Frida, shared a heartfelt tribute to her former co-star, Matthew Perry, on Monday (October 30). The news of Perry’s passing, best known for his role in the popular comedy series Friends, had emerged two days earlier, revealing that he tragically died at the age of 54, apparently due to drowning.
Hayek and Perry collaborated on the 1997 romantic comedy Fools Rush In. The movie revolves around Alex Whitman (played by Perry), a project manager from New York City, who has a brief affair with a photographer named Isabel Fuentes (played by Hayek) during a business trip to Las Vegas. When Isabel informs Alex that she is pregnant, the two decide to try and form a relationship, despite facing significant cultural differences.
“Two days ago, I woke up to the shocking news that Matthew Perry is no longer with us,” conveyed Hayek on social media, accompanying her words with a photo of herself and Perry. She further wrote, “It’s taken me a couple of days to process this profound sadness. There is a special bond that happens when you share dreams with someone, and together you work towards them.”
Salma Hayek additionally revealed how touched she was when Perry, last year, expressed his affection for Fools Rush In on his Instagram stories and considered it the best movie of his career. In his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, he reiterated his love for this romantic comedy by stating, “To this day, it’s probably my best movie.”
“Throughout the years, he and I found ourselves reminiscing about that meaningful time in our lives with a deep sense of nostalgia and gratitude,” Hayek continued. “My friend, you are gone much too soon, but I will continue to cherish your silliness, your perseverance, and your lovely heart. Farewell, sweet Matthew, we will never forget you.”
Fools Rush In was nominated for two ALMA Awards – one for Outstanding Feature Film and one for Outstanding Actress in a Feature Film for Salma Hayek.
