Peso Pluma, the popular Mexican musician, is currently experiencing great success. From dominating the music charts with música mexicana to making history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, all eyes are on the “Lady Gaga” singer. However, it appears that not all attention towards him is positive, as concerns for his safety at his upcoming show in Tijuana have arisen.
Yesterday (Sept. 12), Mexican news outlets reported that an organized crime group has targeted Peso Pluma. The Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) has allegedly issued threats against him prior to his performance at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico, scheduled for October 14. It is believed that the CJNG spread their message through narco mantas, which are banners displayed by cartels in public areas to convey specific warnings or messages. These banners were found in the El Mirador and Libertad neighborhoods, as reported by Infobae.
The handwritten threat in Spanish warned Peso Pluma, “This goes out to you, Peso Pluma. Refrain from presenting yourself on October 14th because it will be your last presentation for being disrespectful and [having a] loose tongue. You show up and we’ll harm you.”
Peso Pluma, the Mexican musician who has been breaking charts across the globe just received a series of death threats in the form of “Narco-Banners” warning him that if he plays his sold-out concert in Tijuana, it will be his last.
While it is impossible to verify the credibility of such threats, it is important to note that similar incidents involving Mexican singers and cartels in the past have been taken seriously as per NBC News. Reports indicate that arrests related to this criminal activity have been made. Vice reported that the CJNG may have targeted Peso Pluma due to his performance of narcocorridos about El Chapo at Festival Arre in Mexico City last weekend. Although Peso Pluma sings narcocorridos, he has refused to discuss them with the media.
As of now, Peso Pluma has not commented on the issue. Remezcla has reached out to his team for a statement. The concert is still scheduled to proceed, but Tijuana’s mayor, Montserrat Caballero RamÃrez, is well aware of the situation. She announced during a press conference that they are evaluating the situation and will decide whether to proceed with the concert based on the progress of the investigation, prioritizing the safety of the artist and the people of Tijuana. The local newspaper, El Sol de Tijuana, quoted her saying that they would provide heightened security measures, including the presence of the state and local National Guard.
This isn’t the first time Mayor Caballero RamÃrez has discussed Peso Pluma’s music genre. Earlier this year, she mentioned the possibility of prohibiting corrido tumbados concerts in the city, although no action has been taken yet.
This year, there has been a growing trend among politicians attempting to ban corrido tumbados concerts across Mexico. In May, Cancun attempted to prohibit concerts that “promote violence.” Additionally, Mexico City’s AMLO suggested música mexicana songs for young people to listen to instead of corrido tumbados.
Furthermore, other corridos stars have canceled their own shows due to safety concerns related to organized crime. In February, Grupo Arriesgado canceled their show in Tijuana due to alleged threats from the same organized crime group.
