Presently, Omar Apollo is gearing up for his premiere as an actor. The Mexican-American artist publicized his involvement in the upcoming movie Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Noted primarily for his music journey, Apollo has subtly hinted at his orientation in his songwriting. However, it wasn’t until his recent album Ivory in 2022 that he wholeheartedly embraced it. The track “Evergreen” from the album marked his inaugural appearance on the Billboard Hot 100. The subsequent year saw him being nominated for a Grammy under the category of Best Emerging Artist. Having carved a niche in the realm of music, Apollo is now exploring the domain of the silver screen.
In a disclosure posted on X, Apollo revealed his role in Queer, a film helmed by Guadagnino, recognized for the recent success Challengers. Set against the backdrop of 1940s Mexico City, the storyline revolves around Daniel Craig portraying an American expatriate and a war veteran who embarks on a romantic entanglement with a younger male character portrayed by Drew Starkey.
“Enthused for my first foray into movies with Luca and an exceptional cast,” Apollo conveyed in his announcement. As detailed on IndieWire, Apollo has landed a significant role in the film.
Queer is scheduled to launch at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in the upcoming month. The movie is also lined up for contention for the prestigious Golden Lion accolade. Further information regarding a broader release is yet to be unveiled. Apart from Apollo, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, and Lisandro Alonso.
Apollo’s recent offerings encompass his sophomore album God Said No, featuring popular tracks like “Spite,” “Less of You,” “Done With You,” and an unanticipated cameo by Pedro Pascal. The God Said No World Tour kickstarted on July 15 in Melbourne, Australia, and is slated to hit the U.S. on Aug. 20 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
