Nike Launches Piragua-Inspired Sneakers In Tribute To Puerto Rico

To celebrate National Puerto Rican Day on June 11, 2023, Nike will be launching a new pair of sneakers that pay tribute to Puerto Rico’s sweet culture, specifically the popular frozen treat called piragua.

The Nike Air Max 1 “Puerto Rico” Collection will feature two styles: Blue Gale and Orange Frost. Both designs draw inspiration from the piraguas found in Puerto Rico. Similar frozen treats are known by different names in various Latin American countries. In the Dominican Republic, they are called frio frio or yun yun, while in Mexico and the southwest United States, they are referred to as raspa or raspado, a refreshing option to beat the heat on hot days.

Made from a combination of textile, leather, and suede, the Puerto Rico Blue Gale and Puerto Rico Orange Frost sneakers showcase images of anthropomorphic piraguas with arms and legs on the tongue of the shoe. Embroidered on the heels are the words “Puerto Rico” and “Nike Air.” The sides of the shoes also feature a unique “jewel Swoosh logo.”

With the purchase of a pair of shoes from the “Puerto Rico” Collection, customers will receive a customized towel. This towel can come in handy during outdoor activities on National Puerto Rican Day or even after indulging in a tamarindo-flavored piragua to wipe your mouth.

The Nike Air Max 1 “Puerto Rico” Collection is set to be released sometime this month and will retail for $140.
