Netflix has announced the release date for the highly anticipated adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s celebrated novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude. The first season of this Spanish-language series, which will consist of two seasons, is scheduled to premiere on December 11th and will include a total of eight episodes.
The series is directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López, with filming taking place entirely in Colombia, supported by the author’s family.
“It has been both an honor and a considerable challenge to bring to life a project as complex and demanding as One Hundred Years of Solitude, both as a filmmaker and as a Colombian. Our constant endeavor has been to reconcile literary and audiovisual narratives, striving to create visual interpretations that embody the beauty, poetry, and profound influence of a story that has a universal resonance,” remarked Director Laura Mora. “This has been realized through a profound love and respect for the novel, aided by an exceptional technical and creative team.”
“Directing this project has offered both trials and a sense of adventure; after all, taking risks is crucial for discovering meaning in our efforts,” expressed Director Alex García López. “In adapting One Hundred Years of Solitude, my goal was to create something authentic that meets the standards of international productions, as the narrative truly deserves it.”
One Hundred Years of Solitude is based on the legendary 1967 novel, recognized as one of the defining works of Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 and passed away in 2014. Celebrated as a fundamental example of magical realism, the book has sold over 50 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages.
