Mattel has introduced a new Pre-Hispanic Día de Muertos Barbie Doll to pay tribute to the cherished festival of remembrance. This unique doll is designed by the esteemed Mexican fashion designer Kris Goyri, who is known for seamlessly blending traditional Mexican styles with a modern twist.
The Barbie X Kris Goyri Día de Muertos Doll is elegantly dressed in a white gown featuring balloon sleeves, accentuated at the waist with a vibrant embroidered belt that draws inspiration from Indigenous Nahua clothing. Completing her striking appearance is a turquoise necklace and a crown made of marigold flowers, or cempasuchil, which adorns her sleek, black hair cascading down to her ankles. Goyri has also artistically designed the doll’s black and white Catrina makeup, offering a subtle contrast to the two Signature 2024 Día de Muertos Dolls released at the same time.
This limited-edition doll is beautifully packaged in a cobalt blue and orange box, surrounded by decorative containers filled with cempasuchil flowers. Mattel notes that the packaging’s design is influenced by “Mictlán” from Nahua mythology, which tells the story of the journey a soul takes to reach the afterlife.
Since its inception in 2020, Mattel has celebrated this holiday each year by releasing dolls and collaborating with various designers, including Benito Santos in 2022 and Paola Wong from Pink Magnolia Mexico in 2023.
Consumers and collectors alike have shown enthusiasm for this special edition doll, commending Goyri for his commitment to honoring traditions while incorporating contemporary elements.
The response on social media has been enthusiastic, with many praising the doll’s authenticity in representing the clothing of Indigenous peoples during genuine Día de Muertos rituals, contrasting with the more vivid depictions often featured in parades and festivities.
