Following the debut of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which has been criticized for its misleading depiction of the brothers’ narrative, Netflix has revealed plans for a documentary centered on the Menendez brothers. This documentary is set to premiere on October 7th and will feature interviews with both Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of killing their parents, Kitty and José Menendez, on August 20, 1989. The documentary will offer perspectives from trial attorneys, journalists who covered the case, jurors, family members, and other witnesses, along with insights from the brothers themselves. This film is directed by esteemed Argentinian filmmaker Alejandro Hartmann, recognized for his projects such as Carmel: Who Killed Maria Marta? and The Photographer: Murder in Pinamar.
In contrast, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story delivers a dramatized account of the siblings, implying they had an incestuous relationship, which is suggested as one motive for their parents’ murder. This series, which is also on Netflix, has garnered significant attention, prompting the real Erik Menendez to recently voice his concerns about its authenticity via a post on his wife Tammi’s social media account.
“It is sad for me to know that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime has taken the painful truths several steps backward — back through time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape trauma differently than women. Those awful lies have been disrupted and exposed by countless brave victims over the last two decades who have broken through their personal shame and bravely spoken out,” Menendez expressed.
