Empowering the Next Generation: Smithsonian Latino Center’s Young Ambassadors Program in 2012

In 2012, the Smithsonian Latino Center launched the Young Ambassadors Program, an initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of leaders in the Latino community. This program has had a significant impact on participants and has been a driving force in creating opportunities for young Latinos to thrive.

The Young Ambassadors Program is a highly competitive program that selects outstanding Latino high school students from across the United States and Puerto Rico. These students are provided with the unique opportunity to spend a week in Washington, D.C., exploring the rich cultural and historical resources of the Smithsonian Institution.

The program curriculum is designed to enhance the participants’ knowledge and understanding of Latino history, culture, and art. Through interactive workshops, museum visits, and lectures from renowned scholars and artists, the students gain a comprehensive understanding of the diverse contributions made by Latinos to American society.

Besides exploring the Smithsonian’s vast collection, the program also focuses on developing the participants’ leadership skills and fostering a sense of pride in their heritage. The Young Ambassadors engage in discussions on relevant social issues and participate in group projects that promote cultural awareness and community outreach.

Throughout the program, the students are mentored by professionals from various fields, who provide valuable guidance and support. This mentorship helps the students develop their personal and professional goals, and equips them with the tools to succeed in their chosen paths.

One of the highlights of the Young Ambassadors Program is the culminating event known as “The Showcase.” During this event, the participants present their research, artwork, and personal reflections on their experiences in the program. This allows them to demonstrate their knowledge and creativity to a wide audience, including their families, Smithsonian staff, and other community members.

The impact of the Young Ambassadors Program goes far beyond the week-long experience in Washington, D.C. Many of the program alumni have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in the arts, sciences, and humanities. They have become advocates for their communities, using their knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the world.

The Young Ambassadors Program continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of young Latinos, empowering them to embrace their cultural heritage, develop leadership skills, and contribute meaningfully to society. It serves as a testament to the importance of investing in the next generation and creating opportunities for their success.
