Don Omar is revealing his confrontation with a cancer diagnosis. The revered artist from Puerto Rico has come forward with insights into his fight against the disease and has received a wave of support from numerous fellow music industry members.
As a pioneer of the reggaeton movement in Puerto Rico, Omar, who is among the ranks of Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, and Ivy Queen, skyrocketed this genre to international prominence with hits like “Salió El Sol” and “Dale Don.” After taking a sabbatical for nearly ten years, Omar triumphantly returned to the music scene in 2023 with the Back to Reggaeton EP. His resurgence this year saw the Back to Reggaeton Tour draw large crowds, filling up arenas across the U.S.
By April, Omar announced additional dates for the Back to the Reggaeton Tour, set to kick off in August. Halting his tour preparations, he announced his condition to the public. On Instagram, with the photo of his hospital ID band, Omar shared his unwavering resolve to fight the disease head-on.
“Yes today [I am diagnosed with cancer], but tomorrow, I will defeat cancer,” he asserted, with a photo that displayed his wrist clad with an Orlando Health ID band. “I cherish your positive vibes. Can’t wait to reconnect with you all soon. #fuckcancer”
Following his revelation about the cancer diagnosis, a deluge of support rained down on Omar from the musical fraternity. Such artists as Franco “El Gorila,” Olga Tañón, and Sharlene Taulé took to his post to deliver their best wishes as he faces his treatment.
“As always, the Almighty stands with you, and my prayers are imbued with hope and faith for your swift recovery,” Franco “El Gorila” stated. “You are a warrior.” Tañón added, “My dear, you’ve combated numerous battles, and this one will be no different; you’ll triumph.”
Other music figures like DJ Nelson, Alcover, and Willy William have also offered their solidarity and encouragement for Omar. No information has surfaced as to whether his medical regimen will disrupt the next leg of his tour, which is scheduled to resume on August 7 in Oakland, CA.
