Diego Luna and Gael GarcĂa Bernal brought a distinctive touch to the 2024 Emmys. The pair took the stage to announce the award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, delivering their presentation entirely in Spanish.
“Hello to the millions of Spanish speakers in this country,” Luna began, before explaining the category fully in Spanish. GarcĂa Bernal followed suit by declaring the winner, also in Spanish.
Both actors, who are originally from Mexico, are gearing up to work together on Hulu’s La Máquina. This Spanish-language series tells the story of an aging boxer named Esteban (Bernal), who decides to return to the ring after his manager Andy (Luna) secures him a title shot. Eiza Gonzalez, known for her role in 3 Body Problem, is also part of the cast.
Luna has experience with Spanish at various events, having recently used it at D23 to introduce his Star Wars series Andor, which is set to return for its second and final season. He has frequently employed Spanish for promotional activities related to the show.
