The co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala have been announced, and once again, a member of our communities is stepping into a prominent role at this prestigious event. This year, Colman Domingo will co-chair alongside Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour, and honorary chair LeBron James. Domingo will make history as the first Afro-Latino to hold the co-chair position.
The 2025 Met Gala has unveiled its co-chairs alongside the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s announcement about the Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This exhibit is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, and it will feature clothing, paintings, photographs, and more—highlighting the enduring impact of Black men’s fashion within dandyism from the 18th century to today.
Notable Latines who have previously chaired the Met Gala include Oscar de la Renta in 1994, 2001, and 2014, Paula Cussi in 1998, Carolina Herrera in 2001, Salma Hayek in 2011, Lauren Santo Domingo in 2013, Gisele Bündchen in 2017, Lin-Manuel Miranda in 2022, and JLO and Bad Bunny in 2024.
Domingo is coming off an impressive year, having earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of civil rights leader Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin. He also made a memorable entrance at last year’s Met Gala, where his ensemble was celebrated as one of the top looks of the event, marking his first appearance at the gala. Furthermore, he is scheduled to take on the role of Michael Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, in an upcoming biographic film about the legendary artist.
The Met Gala is set for May 5, 2025. The dress code will be revealed in early 2025, and the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibition will be accessible at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 6 to October 26.
