Mexico greets its first woman president. Claudia Sheinbaum, allied with the progressive Morena party, achieved a significant victory over Xochitl Gálvez from the opposing coalition.
Early tally estimates on Monday morning (June 3) indicated that Sheinbaum, the former chief executive of Mexico City, secured 60 percent of the votes, whilst Gálvez captured 28 percent. Jorge Álvarez Máynez came in at third, with 10 percent.
“It fills me with pride to stand as Mexico’s premier woman president,” Sheinbaum announced in her victory speech. “We’ve demonstrated Mexico’s commitment to democracy with peaceful elections. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the myriad of Mexican nationals who showed their support at the polls today.”
The past summer, Sheinbaum stepped down from her role as the mayor of Mexico City to embark on her presidential race. With her candidacy announcement, she pledged to continue the endeavors of then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s vision for national “transformation” while infusing it with her unique perspective.”
“This is a day of significance as the people of Mexico have chosen in a free and democratic fashion that Claudia Sheinbaum rises as the foremost female leader in our Republic’s two-hundred-year sovereignty,” Obrador exclaimed online. “Kudos to everyone participating in these auspicious times filled with dignity and transformation.”
Ever since Sheinbaum announced her candidacy, the electoral debate has been dominated by key issues such as economic strategies and measures aimed at curbing the rising tide of gang-related violence that has plagued Mexico.
In excess of 20,000 political offices were up for grabs across the nation, making this the largest election in the annals of Mexico. It was, moreover, deemed the deadliest electoral season in Mexico’s recent chronicle.
Since the prior summer, 38 political aspirants contesting for various positions across Mexican territories, including mayoral roles, legislators, and commissioners, have been assassinated. Israel Delgado Vega of the Morena party, a municipal council nominee in Cuitzeo, Michoacán, was fatally targeted in a drive-by assault at his abode the preceding Sunday (June 2).
