Los Angeles to Host Felicitous Tribute Performance by Celia Cruz The band that supported Celia Cruz is regrouping to pay homage to the late Cuban icon. A public announcement today (July 29) revealed that the free event in honor of Salsa Royalty, titled A Tribute to Salsa Royalty: Celia Cruz, will take place this weekend in Los Angeles, California.

Cruz’s initial breakthrough on the music scene was marked by her collaboration with Fania Records, a record label pivotal in the global spread of salsa music. Fania Records also served as home to influential figures in tropical music such as Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe, and Tito Puente. In celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary this year, it is partnering with Grand Performances in Los Angeles and Nance Arte Productions to organize A Tribute to Salsa Royalty: Celia Cruz.

Rafael González, CEO of Grand Performances, remarked, “Celia Cruz’s journey to stardom initiated in Cuba, flourished in the U.S., and persists as a treasured icon worldwide, notably in Los Angeles. We at Grand Performances are thrilled to showcase this tribute, which will honor Celia Cruz’s remarkable achievements and bring together admirers of her enduring legacy in Los Angeles. The event will showcase musicians and dancers embodying the wide-ranging influence of her contributions to salsa music and global culture.”

The complimentary homage concert to Cruz is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at California Plaza in Los Angeles from 6 to 10 p.m. Performing at the event will be Havana Secret, a group of musicians who accompanied Cruz during her final tour. Contra Tiempo and Gia Fu will also honor Cruz’s legacy with their performances. The event, open to all ages, will include food and beverage vendors on-site.

The 60th anniversary of Fania Records was also commemorated at the 2024 Premios Juventud ceremony last Thursday. Artists like La India, Ivy Queen, Anitta, Luis Figueroa, Oscar D’León, Tito Puente Jr., and Tony Succar delighted the audience with a medley of classics from the label’s roster, including Cruz’s hit “Quimbara.”
