Rachel Zegler’s upcoming performance in Snow White is among the most highly anticipated cinema debuts of the coming year. Although specifics about the movie’s direction remain confidential, Zegler has disclosed some of the inspirations behind her role, particularly highlighting Brandy’s portrayal of Cinderella.

In a recent interview with Variety, Zegler reflected on her childhood fascination with the 1997 film that starred Brandy as Cinderella, alongside Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother. “I grew up in a household where that was Cinderella. We obviously watched the animated version, but in a child’s mind, it’s remarkable how it processes things, thinking, ‘OK, that’s Cinderella,’” she told Variety. “Of course, the blond-haired, blue-eyed Cinderella from the 1950s cartoon is also Cinderella.”

Brandy responded to Zegler’s fondness for her work, telling the same outlet that the Colombian-American actress “will be absolutely incredible in this role.” The artist known for “Have You Ever” also offered Zegler advice concerning the backlash she has encountered in taking on the role.

“You’re not stepping into this role to conform to the expectations of critics,” she encouraged Zegler through Variety. “You’re doing this for every little Colombian girl who has yet to see herself in a Disney princess. You’re embodying the little girl you once were, who missed that representation of her Colombian heritage. You’re showing that anything is possible for someone who looks like her, and that is the most important role in the world.”

Back in 2022, Zegler became a trending topic on X (previously known as Twitter) as some users expressed discontent with a Latina actress playing Snow White. While discussing her experiences during an “Actors on Actors” session with Andrew Garfield, she addressed the negative feedback she received online. “We need to show them [the haters] love in the right way. Ultimately, I have a job to fulfill, one that I’m genuinely excited about. I get to be a Latina princess,” she stated.
